He volunteered in May 1915, and was sent to India , where he served in the Punjab , and on the North Western Frontier, and took an active part in quelling the native hill tribes. He returned home and was demobilised in 1919, and holds the General Service Medal with clasp (Afghanistan North West Frontier, 1919).
