Leonard was born in 1885 in
Leytonstone, Essex, the son of Frederick Hurburgh b.1841 in Hobart,
Tasmania, & Jane Ann Kennedy Connell, b. 1848, Limehouse. His
father was a Master Mariner.
He originally joined the 4th Queens Royal West Surrey Regt.,
possibly around 1909. His age was listed as some 3 years older
than he was. He served for about 5 years. In March1915 he joined
the 25th ( County of London ) Cyclists, The London Regiment,
and after 2years 87 days transferred or joined the RNVR [Royal
Naval Division]. He then served in France, being seriously wounded
30th December 1917 at Welsh Ridge, and after a few months in
hospital re-classified as B2 and returned to home base. |
