Ralph was born on the 19 Dec 1891 at Petersham House, Wallam Green,
Fulham, Middlesex, the son of George Frederick Tudor Sherwood, a record
agent and founder fellow of the Society of Genealogists, and Sophia Mary
nee Floyd. In the 1911 census Ralph is shown as an assistant to his
father as a record agent.
There are two mentions regarding Ralph's WW1 service :-
- In an article on his father George in the Society of Genealogists'
magazine of Mar 2012, V.30 No.9 pg.368 is the following mention of
Ralph :-
"There are photocopies of touching letters from Sherwood's son
Ralph, Private in the 2/25th Cyclist and 3rd Reserve Battalion
regarding his training and service in the First World War. The
originals of the letters were deposited at the Imperial War Museum
in 2000."
IWM confirms it
has the following - A collection of original letters, which cover Sherwood's military
service during the period August 1914 - December 1918 (277 pages).
(Note- these do not appear in the IWM online
catalogue)
- In am article in the 1/25th London Battalions magazine "The
Londoner" V.2 No. 2 pg.49 is the following :-
"Cpl. R. T. Sherwood (late of 'C' Coy.) appears to be in for a
little Blighty leave. He crossed the Channel in December 1916, and
was wounded by a piece of shrapnel on May 3rd. He is quite satisfied
with himself and says it was just the thing he had been looking for.
He wishes to be remembered to all his chums of the good old
Lowestoft days."
I have been unable to find a definitive medal roll card for Ralph
based on the above.
Ralph died in 1927.
