Arthur was born in Gatley, Cheshire in 1891, the son of Horace, a
financial journalist, and Mary (nee Speed). Hugh was employed as
a Insurance Clerk in the 1911 census. Arthur joined the
25th London Cyclists before the war and served with the Royal
Tank Corps during the war. His brother Hugh Bateman also served
in the 25th London Cyclist battalion before the war & during the
war.
Arthur first joined the 25th Londons in 1909. His
pre war Service record includes the following :- Enlisted -
First enlisted 25th London Cyclist Battalion at Fulham House on
the 5 Mar 1909, re-enlisted 18 Mar 1913. No. 588 Service -
