Leonard Frederick MATTHEWS


 

Matthews, Sergt Leonard Frederick.
25th County of London Battalion, Home Guard. 
He was a retired engineer of Kidbrooke Park Road, Greenwich, London and died, 'due to war operations', in Brook Hospital, Woolwich, on 27th April 1941. Age 63. 
He was born on the 7th February 1878 at Matching, Harlow, the son of Frederick Rayment and Mary Matthews. 
The husband of Alice Matthews of Blackheath, London, Sergt Matthews was buried on 1st May 1941 in Black B, Row 6, Grave 8, the ceremony was performed by the Rev H.C. Hargraves. Charles Graves, author of 'The Home Guard of Britain' records - 
"On the night of 19th March 1941, Section Leader (Sergeant) L.F. Matthews received such bad injuries (during fire fighting) from an enemy bomb that his leg had to be amputated. As a result this very gallant gentleman lost his life. Matthews had given the whole of his time free to assist the 14th and 15th companies for some months."
