He volunteered in August 1914, and after his training was retained on
important duties with his unit until 1916, when he was drafted to
India
. He remained there until 1919, and during that period took part in the
fighting on the North-West Frontier and in quelling the
Amritsar
riots. While abroad he contracted malaria, and in December 1919 was
demobilised.
He holds the General Service and Victory medals, and the
India
General Service Medal (with clasp,
Afghanistan
, N.W. Frontier, 1919).
