Valerie Cliff's modern photos

In 2007, I took my holidays in northern Pakistan, in the Northern Areas and NW Frontier Province. Spooky, since I booked it before I learned that my great grandfather had been there. The tribal homelands are closed to all foreigners, and to most Pakistanis, as they are essentially lawless, so Waziristan was off limits. I still got a very good sense of the terrain, which is wild and rough and hot and unforgiving and dusty - I can't imagine trying to fight there against natives who know the area intimately.
